5 / 5 stars

The NewAir AH-450 may not be as small and cute looking as some of the fan style space heaters, but don’t be so quick to pass over it.

If you have a small bedroom, den, office or maybe even a dorm room that needs to be heated, then the NewAir AH-450 might be the perfect choice.  At high its wattage is 1500 which is on par with a lot of other space heaters, whatever kind of heating element they use.

So why would you want to use an oil-filled radiator over say a unit with a fan, and is it more energy efficient?  First off, silence is golden.  Some background or white noise might be welcome when you’re trying to go to sleep, but maybe not so much when you are working, trying to watch TV or sharing a space with others.  Since the AH-450 has no fan, it’s quiet.

NewAir AH-450 Radiator Pros & Cons

Pros:  Quiet – Convection heat – Runs on low at 600W – Max 1500W – Tip over protection – On/off timer – Automatic thermostat

Cons:  Not exactly inconspicuous

How does it work?  The NewAir uses electricity to warm the oil that is flowing through the rad.  That oil then dissipates warmth to the surrounding room.  Now some say that this is more energy efficient.  But please keep in mind that 1500 watts is 1500 watts, no matter how it’s used.  Run this consistently on high – while not adjusting your thermostat – will mean an increase in heating costs.  The argument of some is that once the oil reaches its desired temp and the unit cycles off, you are still getting heat from the warm oil, at least until it cools down.  With a fan model space heater, the heat is gone as soon as you turn it off.  But you need to remember that that reverse is also true and this is where things even out.  The oil-filled rad takes longer to heat up, but the fan model generates heat as soon as it’s turned on. Having said all that, it is generally accepted that convection style heaters – which the NewAir AH-450 is – are more energy efficient.

The AH-450 does come with some great safety features like a tip over shut off as well as the fairly standard shut off if the unit should overheat.

The oil itself is safely sealed inside the unit and never needs to be refilled.  No fumes, no odors, no noise.  The slots and fins create more surface space which in turn means more heat is output.  It also has a digital panel with an automatic thermostat and 8 hour on/off timer.  On low the heater will operate at 600 watts, medium at 900W and high at 1500W.  The temperature settings are from 65 to 85°F in increments of 5°.
