Sun Joe iON 40V Cordless iON16LM 16″ Lawn Mower w/Brushless Motor

4.5 / 5 stars

I have to admit that I’d never even heard of Joe before this past winter.  But based on what I learned, I knew I wanted to review the Sun Joe iON 40V Cordless iON16LM Mower.  My neighbour bought a Snow Joe and that thing is awesome.  I’ll do a review of that as well, but since we’re gearing up for mowing season, let’s stick to what matters now.

First, let’s deal with the motor.  As far as I can tell, there are very few lawn mowers with brushless motors on the market.  And that’s important because in a lot of ways a brushless motor is far superior to a traditional motor with brushes.  But since brushless motors are typically more expensive upfront they haven’t exactly set the mower industry on fire.  But things might be changing!

Sun Joe iON 40V Cordless iON16LM Pros & Cons

Pros: Brushless motor – Quiet – Cordless – Bag included – Light weight

Cons:  16″ cutting width – Doesn’t come with spare battery – Doesn’t mulch

Without going into an engineering lesson, brushless motors are smarter, more powerful and more efficient than their old school cousins.  So when comparing cordless devices – and specifically in this case, cordless lawn mowers – you can’t just compare voltage.  A lower voltage brushless motor is far better and a higher voltage, old school brushed motor.  So a new cordless mower with a brushless motor will mean that it can perform better and last longer on a charge than a mower with a traditional cordless motor.

Now for the actual mower.  First, if you have a large lawn, you might want to look elsewhere.  At a cutting width of only 15″ that means several more passes than if you went with a bigger 21 inch.  If the extra walking doesn’t hinder you, read on.  Also of note, the max cutting height on the Sun Joe iON16LM is only 3.15 inches.  While that certainly isn’t unheard of, a lot of mowers offer cutting heights up to 3.75″.  However, unless you’re the type to get down on the lawn with a measuring tape to inspect your grass, I would think that hardly matters.  The adjustments are made with an easy to use lever on the side of the mower.   You can also adjust handle height to suit a shorter or taller person.

The included bag (9.25 gal capacity) is easy to attach, just lift the ejector flap at the back of the mower and attach.

The Sun Joe cordless is light and easy to maneuver, weighing only 37 pounds.  The battery takes between 2.5 and 3 hours to charge.  How long it lasts will depend on a lot of variables like how wet/dry the grass is, how long the grass is, how level/bumpy your lawn is and so forth.  Having said that, there shouldn’t be any problem in doing an average size lawn in one charge.  There is a battery level indicator that you can check while mowing.  If you have a large lawn, you might want to consider buying an extra battery and having that charged and ready as well.

Consider the following:

If you’re into the wonders and advances of newer technology, this is the mower for you.  Part of the problems with cordless power tools has been the lack of power.  The brushless motor addresses that.  And while you often have to deal with premium prices when dealing with newer technology, the Sun Joe iON Cordless is pretty much the same price as last year’s GreenWorks 25312 G-MAX cordless mower.
