STX Dehydra 600 Watt 10 Tray Food Dehydrator DEH-004

STX Dehydra 600w DEH-004 Food Dehydator

4.5 / 5 stars

If you’ve read my review on the STX Dehydra 1200 watt, you know my feelings on the brand. STX Dehydra manufactures some of the best food dehydrators on the market! Excalibur who??

But today we’re talking about the STX 600 watt, so let’s move on. Going with the flow of my other food dehydrator reviews I’ll compare this model to the Excalibur 3900. And this is the model from the  Dehydra lineup that is in direct completion to it. For the most part it’s the same thing, just from a different manufacturer. Only it’s cheaper and doesn’t have the hype surrounding it.

The model is smaller than the 3900, and that’s the most outstanding difference between the two. Don’t be fooled by the extra tray, the overall square feet of drying space it smaller. 15 SqF with the 3900 and 10 SqF with the STX 600. Neither has a timer, which some including me,  find to be a huge failing. But some intrepid souls work around that by adding a timer between the unit and the wall plug. It just takes a trip to the hardware store to buy a timer. If you prefer a model with a timer you can move up to the 800 watt or 1200 watt units. And one more very important fact – at least it should be to all of you – they are both BPA free.

Another major difference, and a huge plus, is the fact that this unit makes provision for a drawer. You leave four trays out and insert the drawer/door. This means you can rise bread dough or make yogurt in your food dehydrator!  Here’s how that looks:

STX Dehydra 600w Pros & Cons

Pros: Quiet – 4 tray drawer space – Rear mount fan – BPA free

Cons: No timer

This model – as well as the other sizes in the lineup – are quiet! So if you’re in a small home or apartment and you’re running the unit overnight, this is a huge plus. Some food dehydrators sound like you have a jet engine sitting on your kitchen counter.

Now let’s move on to the stuff you really care about! Like how well will it work in dehydrating your fruits and vegetables, and what about its claims on making jerky? All claims are true! It handles wetter fruits like citrus and berries just fine, while some other food dehydrators can have a bit of a problem. Dried herbs are a snap and so is the jerky.

As with any food dehydrators cooking times vary so it’s always a good idea to figure things out early. You’ll need to base your drying time on how much food you pack in the dehydrator and how thick/thin your fruit or vegetables are cut. If you do add a timer, here is my recommendation. Actually, this is true with the timer or not. Fill the dehydrator with your desired food. Check it when you reach the lower end of the drying time scale and continue to do so until everything is done. Then note how long it took. Next time around, cut the same size, fill to the same capacity and use the timer. Set and forget because you’ve already figured out the desired dehydration time for your specific circumstances.

Another important note. Customer service is fabulous! I had a question about the unit, so I gave them a call. My call was returned within an hour or so. I also browsed through the Amazon reviews and they are quick to deal with any issues such as units damaged in shipping or something that might not be working quite right. I understand they test every unit before it’s shipped out the door. That doesn’t even happen when I spend 30K on a new car!
