Food Deydrator Buying Guide

In the market for the best food dehydrator your money can buy? We're here to help!

Since you're likely at the stage where you are ready to buy a dehydrator – or food dryer as some call them – I'm going to assume you're already familiar with all the advantages of dehydration, but just in case I'll touch on some of the main reasons. Dehydrating is a method of preserving foods like fruit, vegetables and meat. If you have ever eaten beef jerky, that is an example of dehydrated meat. And why would you want to preserve your food in this manner? Well, if you are a camper or hiker, you know that dried snacks are a great thing to have along. Or perhaps you just want to have healthy snacks on hand in your household. Whatever the reasons, browse through our reviews to the dehydrator that best suits your needs.

A couple of tips. One machine does it all, so you don't need to narrow your search down to something like a meat dehydrator or beef jerky dehydrator. Nearly any one of them will be able to handle a variety of foods such as the fruit, vegetables and the meat already mentioned, along with such items as fish, fowl, herbs, spices and even flowers for potpourri.

Having said that, a few more tips. Units are available both round and rectangular or square. While the circular models are generally cheaper there is a drawback you should be aware of, namely you can fit less in them. This isn't just due to the shape, but also because they have a center post that takes away even more room. Also, if you're wanting to make something like beef jerky – think long strips – you're going to want a rectangle or square model. Of if you want to dry flowers, the same thing becomes an issue. Be aware of your needs and buy accordingly. Another issue to watch out for – fan placement. If the fan is at the bottom, eventually you'll get food droppings in it, so for the most part, I would recommend a food dehydrator that has a top or side mount fan. These are just a few things you might want to watch out for.

As far as brands go, the Excalibur Dehydrator certainly stands as a crowd favorite, but that doesn't automatically make it the best. Don't discount brands like Nesco, Waring, L'Equip and more. You can be sure that our reviews will cover all the best machines regardless of the brand. All you need to do is take the time and learn which food dryer is best for you based on your specific needs.
