A good cup of coffee doesn’t need to cost you a fortune! And the Hamilton Beach 49983 is proof of that.

This model has only be available for about 6 months, and isn’t that different from the Hamilton Beach 49980Z that’s been available for a few years now.  As far as I can tell, the only major differences between the two is that the older model doesn’t accept K-Cups and comes with a travel mug included while the newer 49983 does accept K-Cups but doesn’t come with a travel mug.  That and a slightly different design.

I have to say I’m intrigued by the idea of this 2 way brewer, and I’m surprised that other manufactures haven’t jumped on board and designed something similar.  And if they have and I’ve missed it, my apologies!  Anyway, if your circumstances mean that at times you would like to brew an entire pot of coffee but at other times just a single cup, the Hamilton Beach 49983 is your answer.  Two machines in one.

Other than the fact that you have a two in one machine, this has all the usual features of a typical coffee maker.

Hamilton Beach 49983 Pros and Cons

Pros: This model is compatible with K-Cups – Bold strength option – You can use a travel mug – Pause and serve feature

Cons:  You can’t use K-Cup knock-offs, just the original – Travel mug not included

A few things that I did find.  Make sure you only use medium ground coffee.  If you use a finer grind you may find yourself dealing with an overflow.

The quality of your K-Cups is also an issue.  If you aren’t buying real K-Cups but some cheap knock off – yes they do exist – you’ll find that that 49983 likely won’t brew them properly an there is a good chance you’ll wind up with horrible tasting coffee that’s sprinkled with grounds.

For those that are used to using a Keurig or Tassimo, note that there isn’t a water resovior.  Every time you go to make yourself a single serve, you need to add the water, just like you add fresh water when you’re about to make a pot.  This isn’t a big deal for me, but it seems to be for others, so just a word of warning.

In my opinion this is a great coffee maker with the added bonus of the combo feature.  Now if someone would come out with a machine that will brew K-Cups, T-Disks and a pot of coffee, I would be very happy.
