This is a fairly basic drip coffee maker, but don’t be fooled by its simplicity.  As a matter of fact, after researching and reviewing it, this is the machine I have chosen for my own kitchen.  Of course, while it’s a good choice for me, that doesn’t mean it will be for you as well.

The feature that I like the best is the Aroma feature.  More often than not, I’m only brewing two cups of coffee at a time.  My old 10 cup Braun made great coffee when brewing a whole put but when I only wanted to brew two cups – not so much.  If you are only making a small amount of coffee, what happens is the grounds don’t have enough time to be saturated in water, minimizing flavor extraction.  The Aroma feature will slow down the brew process in order to counter balance that.

Something else that aids in the process is multiple water nozzles.  If water is dumped from one spout onto your coffee grounds, full and even saturation cannot be achieved.  The Capresso SG120 solves that by having water pour out from several heads.

Capresso SG120 Pros & Cons

Pros:  Aroma feature for small brewing amounts – Multiple shower heads/nozzles – Permanent filter – Fully programmable

Cons:  No water filter – Very bright LCD display may bother some

The SG120 comes with a permanent gold tone filter, but if you prefer to use paper filters you have the option to use a #4 cone filter.  (find out more on the issue of permanent vs paper coffee filters on the index page of this section)

Want to set your coffee maker up the night before so your brew is there for you when you get up?  You can, with the 24 hour timer.  However, I have to tell you, the illuminated clock display is bright enough to be seen from the space station! I don’t have a problem with it – the whole unit, including the blue light – works with my granite countertop of choice.  A very dark Blue Pearl.  That and the fact that I don’t nap in the kitchen!  Having said that, other users have found it quite distracting and overly bright.

I would have liked it if a water filter was included – my old machine had one – but I’m okay with using water that has already been filtered with my Brita.  And while the coffee isn’t scalding, burn your tongue hot, it is hot enough for me.  I know the true coffee disciples will scoff at something less than 205°s, but again, it is hot enough for me.  If you are a true coffee disciple and want a machine that will brew at what has been determined to be the correct temp, take a look at the Bonavita BV1800.
